Music lessons for kids 5-18; guitar, bass, drums, piano, singing
School of Rock has been serving Eden Prairie since 2008 with its performance-based music education program for kids 5-18 years old. Preschoolers begin with Mommy + Me piano lessons while early elementary students begin their musical journey in Rookies class where they learn the basics of the guitar, bass, drums, piano and vocals. From 8-18 years old students engage in a weekly private music lesson and a weekly band rehearsal which culminates in performing a live rock concert in a real rock venue.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
School of Rock was founded in 1998 in Philadelphia PA and came to the Twin Cities in 2006. We opened the Eden Prairie location in 2008.
What is your primary product or service?
We teach guitar, bass, drums, piano and singing lessons to children ages 5-18 years old. Preschoolers begin in a Mommy + Me piano class, then advance to Rookies where they begin their musical journey playing the guitar, bass, drums and vocals as well as advancing on the piano. From there they select an instrument to focus on and engage in a weekly private lesson and a weekly group rehearsal which culminates in them performing a live rock concert in a real rock venue.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
When my own son was a teenager he dreamed of performing with a band but there wasn't a performance-based music school that played contemporary music. I discovered the School of Rock online and I called them. They were just beginning to sell franchises. I met with the founder and I liked his philosophy of teaching and felt that School of Rock truly answered a need for many kids in our community. So I bought the franchise and have loved every minute since.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We were founded on the premise that taking music lessons and never playing a gig is like going to basketball practice and never playing a game. After a while, there's no point and this is why kids quit playing music, get bored with their instrument, etc. So our performance aspect is a huge differentiator between School of Rock and other music instruction. Beyond that, we are a social club for young musicians. Our students "hang out" at School of Rock and socialize, even when they don't have a lesson.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I currently own one location. I owned three locations over the past 10 years, but my favorite part of owning School of Rock is knowing each student and their parents personally and because of the growth of the schools, it became impossible for me to do that in three different locations. So I sold the other two locations and now I can be found daily at the Eden Prairie School of Rock.
